Exterior Painting by Climate Zone

🎨 Exterior Painting

The best time to paint and the right paint product depend heavily on your climate. Temperature, humidity, UV exposure, and moisture levels all affect paint adhesion, cure time, and longevity. Find the guide for your region below.

Choose Your Climate Zone

Why Climate Matters for Exterior Paint

In the Southwest, UV radiation degrades paint 2–3x faster than in cloudy Northern climates, requiring UV-resistant formulations. Southeast homes deal with mildew and humidity requiring anti-mold additives. Midwest and Northeast painters have a narrow application window — paint needs temperatures above 50°F and low humidity. Know your zone before you buy.

Quick Tips by Season

Season Priority Task
Spring Inspect winter damage, ideal painting window in many zones
Summer Best window in Northern zones; avoid direct sun in Southwest
Fall Last chance before cold in cold climates
Winter Avoid painting in most zones; prep and plan instead

Regional Climate Overview

Exterior painting project success depends heavily on timing and product selection for your climate. In the Northeast and Midwest, the painting window is narrow: temperatures must be consistently above 50°F (ideally 50–85°F) and humidity below 85% for proper paint adhesion and curing. This typically means late spring through early fall, avoiding humid summer stretches. Southeast painters can work almost year-round but must avoid the hottest, most humid days (high humidity prevents proper curing and can cause peeling). Southwest homeowners painting in high-UV, high-temperature environments need exterior paints with UV stabilizers and, for stucco surfaces, elastomeric coatings that can handle thermal expansion without cracking. West Coast painting in the Pacific Northwest must account for frequent rain — waterborne latex paints need adequate dry time, and coastal homes may need anti-mildew additives. Mountain West painters need UV-resistant products (altitude increases UV intensity) and must account for dramatic daily temperature swings.

Surface preparation — cleaning, scraping loose paint, priming bare wood — is as important as paint selection in every climate. A proper prep job can double paint lifespan regardless of region.
